New Pattern, Coupon Code, & Giveaway! Perspective Cowl

posted in: contest, cowl, knitting, knitting pattern | 24

This pattern has been written and photographed for nearly a year. The final part that took so long to finish–the layout. Why? WHO KNOWS. Let’s just say, I work well under pressure. I spend a lot of time writing, knitting, editing, and preparing patterns for publishing under deadlines, so when it comes to publishing my own patterns–which don’t have deadlines–it can be hard for me to finish those final steps to getting them done.

Finally, I’m excited to share with you the Perspective Cowl! Named after the lovely gradient kits put together by Mountain Colors, these kits include 5 mini skeins of yarn in gradient colorways. I really like the mini skeins as opposed to the more common skeins of yarn that shift colors because this means you get to control where the color changes happen–and they don’t have to be abrupt unless you want them to be. Personally, I prefer more subtle color changes, so this pattern combines stripes and textures to shift from one color to the next.

I knit mine in the Pale Sage/Moss Blue colorway, and I’m in love with the finished cowl! The colors are available in three weights from Mountain Colors, Crazyfoot (fingering weight), River Wash Sport (sport weight), and Twizzle (worsted weight) which is what I used. The combination of silk and merino means that even for my very sensitive neck this is totally wearable right next to the skin, and the silk gives it a lovely drape that’s just perfect for a cowl.

What if you want to make the cowl also in the different weights of the yarns. Do you cast on’s for the other weights?

I think it’d be a great way to mix and match little bits of yarn from your stash–I think that’s what you mean? You could easily adjust the cast on number to make the cowl wider/narrower to accommodate thicker/thinner yarn (and there’s a note about this in the pattern, too!). Personally I’d probably go for yarns that were all pretty similar in weight, but that might just be my own OCD. I’d also adjust the needle size accordingly.

Great. My LYS has the fingering weight of these mini skein kits and I know the perfect color for it. You did say that the pattern has a note about doing in fingering weight?

      Kris,

The pattern has a note about changing the cast on number. If you were to make it in a fingering weight I think you’d just go down a needle size or two and cast on more stitches. I’d love to see a fingering weight version!

ETA: The Fingering weight has more yardage, so you might want to to add a few rows here and there to use up the extra yarn, which would take a little improv.

    Hi Mari-
I just purchased your pattern for the Perspective Cowl and I can’t wait to start it! I ordered the yarn from Paradise Fibers but I was unable to get the Pale Sage/Moss in Twizzle so I ordered it in Crazyfoot which is the fingerling weight. How many more stitches do you think I need to cast on and what needle size do you suggest? Thank you for your help.

Do you carry the yarn up as you change colors or do you cut your yarn?

    • Mari
      | Reply

I carry up–less ends to weave in that way, and you’re usually only carrying up a few rounds.
