FO Tuesday: Washcloths

posted in: baby, baby knitting pattern | 3

I was fortunate enough to receive a Baby Washcloth Kit from Appalachian Baby Design to knit up and review. Originally I’d planned to just knit one of these before writing a review, but the pattern was fast and easy, and this was a really relaxing knitting project, so I ended up using the whole ball of yarn and knit four washcloths!

Appalachian Baby Design is a collective of knitters, crocheters and designers creating classic handmade baby gifts. They are based in the Allegheny mountains of the Appalachian chain and gather their inspiration from natural beauty, strong family ties, and a slower lifestyle. Their knit and crochet kits are intended to be gifts of quality and caring, to be passed on for years to come.

They focus on US fibers, organic cotton from Texas, wool and alpaca from small producers around the country. The cotton I used for these washcloths is organic and custom milled and twisted for Appalachian Baby. I love the natural color and the softness of this lovely yarn!

I knit these in the car going up to the mountains a couple weekends ago. I used US 7 needles (instead of the 8 recommended in the pattern) since I tend to knit loosely. They came out to be about 8″ square, which is what the patterned called for. Although the yarn is loosely spun once I got used to it I didn’t have any problem knitting in the car without having to look at my knitting. The pattern is really simple and easy to memorize. It’s a great quick and mindless knitting project! Each one took me about an hour to knit.
Since I used smaller needles I was able to make 4 full washcloths with the yarn provided (the pattern says there’s enough for three). I’m really happy with how these turned out. They are incredibly soft and I think they will be perfect for bath time once the baby arrives!

The kit includes directions on how to tie your washcloth to look like a duck with the yellow yarn, and I couldn’t quite figure it out. When I tried it looked more like a blob…but even if your washcloth origami leaves a little to be desired these washcloths look adorable in the bag that the kit arrived in–and would make a wonderful baby shower gift!
webres-6320You can purchase your own Mamaw’s Wash Cloth Kit from Appalachian Baby Designs. At just $13 for the kit it’s a great value, a fun knit, and a wonderful gift!
Thanks to all my wonderful sponsors, this is part of the baby review blog post series!

[…] Back in August I blogged about some washcloths I knit using a kit from Appalachian Baby. We’ve been using the washcloths at almost every bath time since Dash was born. I even noticed Brian always reaching for these hand knit washcloths first, and when I asked him about it he said he thinks they are the softest. If you missed it, you can read the post here. […]
